One could assume that knowledge and appreciation of the classics is required to appreciate art itself. This is because the definition of the word “classic” is essentially either a work of the “first or highest quality, class or rank” or “serving as a standard, model or guide”. From this basis, coming to the conclusion of having to appreciate the “classics” is only natural. A person who believes otherwise is a person I’d call a silly face!
the classics are what are defined as the “highest forms of their medium.” what someone may consider to be art may not necessarily be considered as art by the general population. art in itself has a debateable definition. so i don’t think you necessarily need to appreciate the classics in order to appreciate art
art is what you think art is. as long as i can appreciate it, it’s art to me, whether it be visual, audio, tactile, w/e
i really don’t like classical music but i think indie music is some of the most amazing music in the world
